Brunello di Montalcino – Italian Wine of the Year According to Wine Enthusiast

 Brunello di Montalcino is the Italian wine of the year, asserts "Wine Enthusiast", the well known U S magazine.
Seven excellent brands of Brunello can be found among the 14 Italian labels that made the "Wine Enthusiast" Top 100 world wine list.
- First is Brunello di Montalcino 1999 di Fuligni, scoring 95/100, second in the overall list, followed by
- Brunello di Montalcino 1999 del Castello di Romitorio of Sandro Chia (24th),
- Brunello di Montalcino 1999 di Palazzo Rosso (34th),
- Brunello di Montalcino 1999 del Castello di Camigliano (70th),
- Brunello di Montalcino 1999 di Casanova di Neri (88th),
- Brunello di Montalcino "Poggio alle Mura" 1999 di Castello Banfi (90th),
- Brunello di Montalcino 1999 di Canalicchio (93rd). Another wine produced in the Montalcino area which made the list, is the,
- "Madre" 2001 di Poggio Antico, (77th), and Tuscany is present with yet another wine, the
- Antinori 2001 Villa Antinori (22nd).
The rest of Italy is represented only by Piedmont, Tuscany's longtime "rival" region, with 3 Barolos and 2 Barbarescos.

(Barolo 73rd),
- Parusso 1999 Bussia Vigna Fiurin (Barolo 83rd),

Among the 6000 wines reviewed by the Wine Enthusiast editors during 2004, only the ones that scored more than 90/100 were considered for the Top 100 list. Other criteria considered were price, availability, brand recognition, producer's history and reputation, in addition to the "sensual excitement" generated by each wine.
"Being considered the top Italian wine by one of the three best U S magazines in the trade is truly satisfying," said Roberto Guerrini of Eredi Fuligni. "This recognition rewards the whole area as well as the 1999 vintage. Currently, Brunello is arguably the most appreciated Italian wine in the States."
"We are very pleased with this result, which give luster to our image and rewards our work in a difficult commercial environment," said Carlo Vittori of Castello di Romitorio, Sandro Chia. "The US market is very important to us."
