2008 Top 100 Wines in Germany

Weinwirtschaft, the German wine magazine, published the list of the 100 most successful wines of 2008.
The magazines editors blind tasted wines which had sold a minimum of 10,000 bottles on the German market. Among the German wines which made the list, we find the 2007 Hochheimer Hölle Riesling Erstes Gewächs/Grand Cru (Künstler estate), 2007 Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Erstes Gewächs/Grand Cru (Robert Weil estate), and 2007 Hofgarten Grauer Burgunder (Pinot Gris) Kabinett trocken (Freiherr von Gleichenstein estate).
Italian wines fared very well as expected, making up almost one third of the Top 100, which the magazine editors split into two main categories: Top 60 Red Wines, and Top 40 White Wines.
In total 20 Italian wines made the top 60 red wine list, with six of them actually among the top 10, including the 2007 Bigi - Vipra Rossa from Umbria, by the Gruppo Italiano Vini, which is priced under €5 per bottle (€3.49). Among the top 40 white wines we find 10 Italian labels.
Overall, German wines took the second place with exactly one quarter of the total (25 labels), but dominated the Top 40 White Wines with 21 products.
