At the Historic Rocca di Bazzano Exhibition and Tasting of the Colli Bolognesi Wines
Staff Writer - August 7, 2007

For two weekends, 8-9 and 15-16 September 2007, over 100 wines to taste.

Rocca di Bazzano

The Rocca (Fortress) of Bazzano

Though legend says that the Rocca di Bazzano was built by Matilde from Canossa, it's origin actually dates back to before the year 1000, when the whole Padana plain was dotted with fortresses raised against barbarian invaders.

The building was then remodeled during the Renaissance by Giovanni II Bentivoglio, who wanted a noble country home for family vacations.

Nowadays the building hosts the Mediateca Intercomunale (Media Center) and the Museo Civico (Civic Museum) 'Arsenio Crespellani'. The cellars, where the ancient foundations can be seen, host an information center managed by the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori 'Cittą Castelli Ciliegi'.

How To Get There
From North, take exit 15 on Hwy.1 and follow directions toward Spilamberto-Bazzano.

From South, exit from Hwy. 1 at Bologna Casalecchio and follow the provincial road SP 569 toward Bazzano.

The 'Rocca' is located in via Contessa Matilde, overlooking the Bazzano downtown.

The majestic Rocca dei Bentivoglio in Bazzano, overlooking the small town by the same name in the province of Bologna, will host the Sixteenth Exhibition and Tasting event organized by the Consorzio Vini Colli Bolognesi (Consortium of the Wines from the Bologna Hills) for two weekends in a row, from 6:00PM to midnight.

This year's location has a strong historic and symbolic meaning for the area, and in addition, it is located in a municipality which was recently elected 'Cittąslow' (or SlowTown, as in 'Town committed to the Slow Food movement'). The place highlights the importance which this event represents for the wines of the Colli Bolognesi. Wine professionals and wine buffs will have the opportunity to discover and evaluate at the presence of the producers, around 100 wines presented by 30 producers associated to the Wine Consortium of the Bologna Hills.

The tasting tables will be managed in collaboration with the sommeliers of the Bologna chapter of the AIS (Italian Association of Sommeliers) at the so-called piano nobile of the fortress and under the loggia. The event will include musical entertainment with the 'Pignoletto Piano Bar', set up in the evocative internal courtyard or, in case of rain, under the portico which surrounds it. The idea is to pair the various labels of Pignoletto white wine, considered the 'king of the Bologna Hills', with popular Italian and international hits in a 'musical wine list'. Thus the wine lovers, in addition to pairing the wines with typical food and cheeses provided by the Caseificio Sociale Fior di Latte (Social Cheese Factory Bloom of Milk), will select tunes that will be performed live at the piano.

In addition, from 7 to 9 PM on two Saturdays, the 8th and 15th of September, two guided wine tastings will take place, with the goal to explore new and old aspects of winemaking in the Bologna Hills area. To participate, reservations are mandatory. Please call 051 6707752 or 3487443394 in advance. Should seats still available, it will be possible to register onsite the night of the events.

Saturday, September 8, 2007 the tasting will be conducted by the Slow Food organization and moderated by the wine critic, Fabio Giavedoni, who will lead the participants in wine comparison and blind tastings. Saturday, September 15, the guided tasting will be conducted by sommeliers of the Bologna chapter of the AIS, presenting a 'horizontal' tasting of DOC dei Colli Bolognesi wines.

The tasting / wine exhibition will offer the opportunity to formalize the 'natural marriage' between the local wines and the mortadella tipica di Bologna (typical Bologna bologna) certified by Slow Food. This particular bologna is produced following strict rules and without addition of preservatives during the preparation, resulting ia superior quality product.

The event will be the ideal setting to discover the wine zone of the Colli Bolognesi, which is rapidly becoming a new center for the Italian quality wine and food tourism, enriched by the ancient local culture and history. One way to experience this part of Italy, is through its DOC quality wines, such as 'King" Pignoletto, a native white typically frizzante (lightly sparkling) with a delicate aroma, which is proposed as dry or spumante (full bubbly) as well. Let's not forget the other grape varieties which have been cultivated from time immemorial in this wine zone, such as Sauvignon, Barbera, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
