October 14: Grapperie Aperte Returns Staff Writer - July 10, 2007
For the day dedicated to Grapperie Aperte (Open Grappa Factories), which this year marks the fourth annual, the distilleries associated with the Istituto Nazionale Grappa (National Institute of Grappa), will be open for visitors who would like to see how grappa is made and find out how to taste it.
The Istituto Nazionale Grappa groups over 100 distilleries which together produce over 70% of all Italian grappa. Sunday, October 14, 2007, this year's Grapperie Aperte day, these estates will open their doors all over Italy to curious consumers and buffs alike who want to find out more about this spirit made in Italy. Last year around 17,000 people spent a few hours visiting distilleries, for education and to taste this typical Italian liquor.
In addition to guided tasting, the rich agenda includes photo exhibitions, presentation of typical and regional recipes paired with the different varieties, and much more. The complete program will be published soon on the official web site of the institute.
"Grapperie Aperte is the best way to widespread the culture of grappa tasting," said Cesare Mazzetti, president of the Istituto Nazionale Grappa. "In the end, we distillers are artisans, thus it gives us a lot of pleasure to welcome visitors to our estates and spend a few hours with them, talking about our work. We strongly believe that in order to understand grappa one must have an understanding of its people and the terroir."
