Pignoletto Beach Party
Staff Writer - June 20, 2007

The Colli Bolognesi (Bologna Hills) wines at Marina di Ravenna for the Pignoletto Beach Party, the singular barefoot-in-the-sand wine event of the Adriatic Sea coastline. The appointment is for July 21, 2007 at Bagno Donna Rosa (Pink Woman Bath), for the event organized in collaboration with the Ravenna chapter of Slow Food.

Consorzio Vini Colli Bolognesi

The Pignoletto wine produced by wineries associated with the Consorzio Vini Colli Bolognesi (Wine Consortium of the Bologna Hills) will be the main character of this unusual rendezvous on the beach of Marina di Ravenna. Saturday July 21, 2007, from 6 to 9PM, at the Bagno Donna Rosa swim trunks and bikinis will be mandatory, while ties and dresses will be strictly forbidden for the big Pignoletto Beach Party. The event is the idea of the Consorzio Vini Colli Bolognesi and, at last year's test edition held at nearby Cervia, around 1,000 people were present.

In addition to offering an excellent way to minimize wine, which is usually confined to formal environment, the event offers the opportunity to convey a positive message to the younger consumers, that of 'tasting' quality wine in moderation, as opposed to 'drinking' alcoholic beverages in excess.

Over 10 years ago the town of Marina di Ravenna had the idea of organizing pleasant happy hours on the beach. It is no big surprise than that right there, surrounded by sand dunes, pine trees, and the exciting open space combination of ocean-sky-sand offered by the Bagno Donna Rosa, located at 38 Viale delle Nazioni, 30 wineries associated with the Consorzio Vini Colli Bolognesi will present their Pignoletto wine in the frizzante (lightly sparkling), fermo (dry), and spumante (sparkling) versions. At this unusual tasting on the beach in the presence of the producers, the wines will be poured professionally by professional girl sommeliers of the Bologna chapter of the Italian Association of Sommeliers, very likely dressed in swimming attire, as well.

Though informal, the Pignoletto Beach Party stands out among other wine events organized on other Italian beaches. In fact, the Pignoletto will be tasted at its best, served in real glass stem glasses, in the aperitif area of the Bagno Donna Rosa, and it will be paired by samples of grilled saraghine, or local seafood from the Adriatico Sea, offered by the Ravenna chapter of Slow Food.

The Pignoletto wine, made with the native grape with the same name, is the expression of the Bologna Hills terroir. Its freshness and intriguing, pleasant, light aroma, makes it perfect for a barefoot aperitif with ocean view. In addition, this wine is excellent paired with seafood platters, pasta and, in general, pairs well with the whole meal.

To this end, a moonlit dinner at the adjoining restaurant will follow the Pignoletto Beach Party. This will offer the opportunity to enjoy local seafood fare prepared with different cultural influences by Chef Stefano Saviotti, and pair them with the favorite version of Pignoletto (dinner reservation is strongly recommended).

Emphasizing the Pignoletto-by-the-sea theme, the Consorzio Vini Colli Bolognesi will pour the aperitif wines at the post-regatta get together on the occasion of the fourth leg of the Giro Vela 2007 organized by Cino Ricci. The Giro d'Italia a Vela (Sailing Tour Around Italy) starts in Trieste and stops at Marina di Ravenna the 26th and 27th of June, 2007.

The next public appointment of the Consorzio Vini Colli Bolognesi will be at the XVI Mostra Assaggio dei Vini dei Colli Bolognesi (Sixteenth Tasting Exhibition of the Wines from the Bologna Hills), which will take place this year at the evocative Bentivoglio Castle in Bazzano, in the province of Bologna, during two consecutive weekends, on September 8 and 9, and 15 and 16, 2007.
