Visit to Napa and the Rubicon Estate
Loris Scagliarini - December 28, 2006

A mutual acquaintance introduced me to Caterina Prochilo, the communications and promotion manager for the very first Monte-Carlo Wine Festival, to be held on November 9, 10, and 11, 2007, at the Hotel Méridien, in the capital city of the small Mediterranean principality.

I thought it would be a good idea for her to visit Napa, so I organized a trip for Friday, December 22nd, which included a visit to the Rubicon Estate, formarly known as Niebaum-Coppola Estate in Rutherford. Gérant and general manager, sommelier Larry Stone, was kind enough to meet with us, despite the short notice and the fact that it was almost Christmas and part of his staff was in vacation.

Our group of four, in addition to Caterina and myself, includes WineCountry.IT English editor-in-chief, Brigit Solé-March, and Italian photographer, San Francisco resident, Alessandro Desogos, who took all the great photos published here. More photographs may be seen in his site.

We first stop in downtown Napa for a brief meeting with William M. Rosenberg, founder and CEO of winespring.com, before heading to V. Sattui Winery for a picnic lunch with food and wine purchased in the winery annex. The store at Suttui is the only one in all of Napa within the compound of a winery, which allows patrons to purchase food and wine as well as to eat on the premises, thus the picnic tables there are often crowded. Even today, despite the fact that it's winter and almost Christmas, the place is fairly crowded. We have no trouble finding a free table for our picnic, however.

Feeling better after our simple meal of polenta, rosted vegetables, red beet salad, bread and cheese, washed down by a coool, pleasant Sattui Sauterne, we head back a mile or so on Highway 29, to the Rubicon Estate and our appointment with sommelier Larry Stone.
