Wining, Dining and Skiing in Valle Isarco (Isarco Valley)
Staff Writer - December 18, 2006

Eight local wines received the '3 glasses' awarded from the Gambero Rosso wine guide, and two restaurants got their first Michelin star.

Valle Isarco

There's no other Italian skiing area from whose tracks one can see the geometric crisscrossing of the vineyards. In the six skiing zones of Valle Isarco, in the Trentino Alto Adige region – Plose-Bressanone, Gitschberg-Maranza, Jochtal-Valles, Racines-Giovo, Vipiteno-Monte Cavallo and Ladurns-Colle Isarco – it is possible to ski overlooking the northernmost Italian vines. In particular, at Plose, the skiing facility above Brix - Bressanone and its bright valley, while skiing down from above the fir trees and Alpine meadows, the skier soon reaches the high density vineyards cultivated according to the latest techniques.

By the way, these are vineyards which command a deserved respect. In fact, the eight wines nelow produced in the Valle Isarco wine zone received the prestigious '3 glasses' recognition from the Gambero Rosso magazine, Vini d'Italia 2007 (Italian Wines 2007) guide.

In addition, with the first stars awarded by the famed European Michelin Guide 2007 to the restaurant Jasmin at the Bischofshof hotel in Chiusa, and the restaurant Tilia in Vandoies, the Valle Isarco is becoming the true 'flavor valley' of the whole Alpine range.

The Valle Isarco wine zone is certainly the homeland of great white wines. In the areas around Chiusa and Bressanone, from where the eye can rest upon the rocky cathedrals of the Putia and Odle peaks, local winemakers produce extraordinary white wines, such as the Silvaner, which is the icon vine of the area, and the Müller Thurgau, Pinot Bianco (White Pinot), Pinot Grigio, Veltliner and Kerner.

International red grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, however, produce surprisingly good wines, with structured, elegant body, and we must not forget the pride of the area, the native Lagrein, or the typical Schiava.

Just a few miles from the ski tracks there are wineries where it's possible to taste and purchase these wines. A visit to the wineries offers the extra excuse for a hike in the vineyards, even in the heart of winter. Usually the snow leaves the vineyards alone and is only visible on the higher slopes, where it keeps the tracks white for the joy of the skiers.

These characteristics make the Valle Isarco a unique and gratifying tourist destination for a wine-food-skiing vacation. In addition to the great wine and food found at the hotel and restaurants in the valleys, at Bressanone, Chiusa, Vipiteno and surrounding towns, also the lodges along the sky track offer excellent wines and snacks.
