Castello Rosso, or Red Castle
The third tourist destination that recently joined the association'Abitare la Storia' is located in Piedmont. Surrounded by a park with century-old trees, the Castello Rosso overlooks the hamlet of Costigliole Saluzzo, in the province of Cuneo, and its massive structure is visible from afar, thanks to its distinctive red color, from which it takes its name.

Built in the fifteenth century as a fortified residence for the Saluzzo noble family, rather than a fortress, currently the castle has become an elegant and welcoming hotel. Rather than being protected by a moat and draw bridge, the antique residence is surrounded by an English garden, enlivened by beautiful plants and a 22-meter (about 72 feet) heated and covered swimming pool.

The various dining rooms on the first floor, facing the garden, are in the traditional style of an early 1900's aristocratic residence, with the addition of all the modern comforts. The walls are frescoed and, in one particular hallway, there are precious late fifteenth century frescoes, attributed to Hans Clemer, the erstwhile painter at the court of the Saluzzo family.
The restaurant is beautiful and refined, and its kitchen offers recipes adapted from antique recipe books, but adapted and 'leaned down' according to current dietary canons.
In addition, the castle is home to a center specializing in psychophysical research, featuring programs which help people understand the 'messages' that come from one's body and mind.
