Osteria del Viandante, or The Wayfarer's Inn

Inside the thirteenth century fortress which characterizes the historic downtown of Rubiera, a town in the province of Modena, in the heart of the Emilia Romagna region, Roberto Gobbi created a one-of-a-kind restaurant, the Osteria del Viandante.

A majestic hall, dominated by a white grand piano, opens onto an elegant stairway leading to the second floor. Here there is a series of frescoed dining rooms, optimally and tastefully furnished, with important tapestries, rich curtains and crystal chandeliers.

This place exudes a feeling of nobility and the food is exalted. The cuisine is based on simple recipes that draw upon local fare, with a strong accent on meat based entrees. The cellar stores over 1,000 labels, offering wines which pair perfectly every recipe and satisfy even the most demanding connoisseurs and gourmands.

Gobbi is very passionate about meat, thus in its restaurant fabulous steaks, which some swear are arguably the best in all of Italy, are served. In addition, the menu features daily unusual meat recipes, such as the trippa alla reggiana (Reggio Emilia-Style Tripe), the testina di maiale all'albicocca (Little Pork Head withAapricot), or the coda di vacca al sugo (Cow Tail in Sauce).

Gobbi's great passion for food lead him to collect ancient cookbooks and, from time to time, he re-proposes ancient recipes during special theme dinners.
