Cantine Aperte (Open Cellars) is arguably the most important Italian wine event of the year. It brings wine lovers from many walks of life to the places where the grapes are grown and puts them in direct contact with the people who produced the wines that they are tasting.

For the past 17 years on the last Sunday in May, the members of the association Movimento del Turismo del Vino (Movement for Wine Tourism), have opened their cellar doors to the public, and offered immediate, direct contact between wine tourists, wine lovers, and wine makers.

In addition to local residents, Cantine Aperte attracts wine and food tourists as well. Most importantly, the event caters to an ever-increasing numbers of younger wine consumers, who participate in this cultural and fun experience enjoying the various gastronomic and artistic events organized by the wineries to pair with the wines offered for tasting.

During the 2009 annual, over 800 wine cellars welcomed around one million visitors. These numbers testify to the fact that the events, organized and managed by the Movimento del Turismo del Vino, are enjoying a growing success.

The Movimento del Turismo del Vino believes that the idea of Cantine Aperte Day could be successfully exported to other wine producing world regions, promoting at the same time the local gastronomical specialties and traditions.
