Tenimenti Marchisio d'Osasca
Staff Writer - September 1, 2006

The September 2006 Company of the Month, Tenimenti Marchisio d'Osasca, takes us to Coazzolo d'Asti, in Piedmont, at 300 meters above sea level. The estate is located in a hilly landscape made of small valleys, surrounded by long ridges which fade into the horizon in a sweet, wide open, dream-like panorama.

In the misty background, the Coazzolo castle is barely visible.

Osasca is an ancient settlement with Ligurian roots. Here, from the top of the Tenimenti Marchisio hills, the gaze wanders from the Alba to the Asti hills and, further away, to the higher peaks of the Alps. The hillsides are sufficiently gentle to allow for cultivation with machinery, and the fields and vineyards generate regular wide patches, which crate geometrical structures, pleasantly defined and soothing to the eye.

In addition to the beautiful bucolic views, the hilly topography provides great sun exposure to the vineyards, especially in the fields facing either east or west, which take advantage of the great length of the ridges. On the other hill sides, however, there are vineyards which have adapted harmoniously to the microclimate and produce grapes of exceptional quality.

The natural fertility of the soil takes advantage of an abundance of underground water, which overflows in rare natural springs. The soil of fields located on steeper inclines is drier, however the vines grow in small vineyards there, as it has been an ideal location since the very first human settlement. To this day, there are vineyards clinging to steep hillsides which are cared for exclusively by hand.

The family and the tradition
The headquarters of the azienda vitivinicola (wine estate) Tenimenti Marchisio d'Osasca is located in the hamlet of Osasca, and is one of the most ancient properties of the village.

Prime Luci

The Marchisio family has been living on the property for seven generations, working these fields which link them to the family history and the love for the good products that has been handed down from generation to generation. Currently the family is composed of Loredana and Carlo, their sons, Francesco and Pierpaolo, and Grandpa Luigi, born in 1913.

Faithful to the ancient peasant traditions, as well as to the teachings passed verbally from father to son for generations, the family-run enterprise applies natural vitiviniculture, with total respect for nature and fellow humans.

The Marchisio family has a peaceful and romantic vision of this magic corner of the planet, the Piedmont Langa and Monferrato areas. It is a vision which is closer to a bucolic lifestyle with deep roots in times past, than to the feverish lifestyle of our current post-industrial culture.

Terre ArideThe virile, yang nature of this pre-Alpine area has been tamed by the work of past generations. The challenge, however, continues and will be faced by current and future generations, who are growing up with the same great respect for the overwhelming beauty of the landscape, but who never forget that, at the same time, this land represents great prosperity.

The history
Under the soil of one of the vineyards lie the archeological remains of the ancient Roman settlement of Coatiolum, dating back to the First Century A.D.

Sito RomanoThe Sito Romano wine is dedicated to this ancient, noble time. The label for this wine was especially designed by the well known artist Romano Levi di Neive, who is famous in Italy and abroad for his way-of-life and its mythical grappas, for which he designs by hand each slightly naive label.

The wines:

  • Sito Romano (Dolcetto d'Alba DOC)
  • PrimeLuci (Barbera d'Asti DOC)
  • PrimeLuci Superiore (Barbera d'Asti DOC Superiore)
  • Terre Aride (Moscato d'Asti DOCG)
  • Monferrato Rosso Nebbiolo
  • Monferrato Rosso (Blend Barbera-Nebbiolo-Cabernet)
  • Monferrato Rosso (Blend Barbera-Freisa-Cabernet)
  • Langhe Bianco Chardonnay
  • Moscato Piemonte Passito (Dessert wine)
