Sogef S.r.l.
Loris Scagliarini - March 1, 2006

Sogef s.r.l.As we do very rarely, this month we decided to honor Sogef s.r.l., a company very different from the usual type that we present in the Company of the Month column. Sogef s.r.l. produces neither food nor wine. To tell the truth they don't produce anything at all. Sogef s.r.l. created and organizes the Vitigno Italia trade show in Naples, an event that, thoughit is just approaching its second annual, has all the characteristics of a newborn tradition. In addition to being the first high-profile wine fair for Central and Southern Italy, Vitigno Italia is unique in that it presents exclusively wines produced from Italian native vines. This is the fact that puts this organization very close to our heart.

Vitigno ItaliaThe Mission
Vitigno Italia sprang from the need to create a high-profile and strongly characterized wine fair for Central and Southern Italy, with the focus on Italian native vines. The exposition is planned and organized exclusively around producers who give priority to, and make wines produced from native and traditional Italian vines.

The main goal is to re-launch the great Italian wine heritage on the global market by presenting wines from well known and appreciated vine, such as Nebbiolo and Sangiovese, but at the same time introducing little known, forgotten and rare varieties such as Nerello, Gaglioppo and Rondinella, produced nowhere else in the world.

The Events
The first annual exhibition took place in June 2005 and was attended by 300 Italian producers and generated contracts for €4.5 million with 1 million bottles sold.

The second annual, scheduled for May 21st to 23rd, 2006 builds over the important achievements of 2005 to further grow and specialize. The number of participating producers grew to over 400 from 18 regions, and the number of wines poured will be over 4,000.

On opening day, Sunday, May 21st, the doors will be open to the general public, while Monday and Tuesday will be reserved for Italian and foreign trade operators only.

The Location
Sogef s.r.l. choose the Mostra d’Oltremare (Oversea Exhibition), in Naples as the location for the events. This is one of the most important exhibition centers in Central and Southern Italy, and is strategically located in the city, so that is easily reached by car, train and city transportation.

The venue offers about 12,500 square meters (around 135,000 square feet) of covered exhibition areas and 15,000 square meters (over 160,000 square feet) of open, fully usable space that will be used for exhibitions and collateral events.

Our Best Wishes
We salute the Sogef s.r.l. people and wish them all the luck that they deserve.

The Italian wine world needs such promoters to spread the word about the variety of wine production of Italy's boot. Globalization is great in many ways, making products ubiquitous and readily available worldwide.

What we do not agree with regarding globalization, is the flattening of nuances, the elimination of differences, unique characteristics, flavors and culture, all aspects which, in our opinion, contribute to making life more interesting and the world worth discovering. In addition, unfortunately globalization of flavors is often achieved by cutting corners. In addition, it takes away the uniqueness provided by the location where a product is grown and prepared, thus reducing quality and aromas.

At times we define the globalization of the wine world as enological 'McDonaldization'. Don't get us wrong, we're not anti-McDonalds, or fast food in general – though we haven't set foot in such a place in decades, as we wold rather sit down at a Slow-Food-compliant eatery. Does anybody truly want to limit his/her food choices to hamburgers and fatty fries (or pre-prepared salads with packaged seasoning included)?

We certainly do not.

Just as we like to be able to choose from a variety of cheeses in our kitchens, from young, creamy, milky cheeses, to rich, complex Parmesan, tangy Pecorino, salted and sweet ricotta, or aged Montasio cheese, we also enjoy having the right wine to drink to match our food and our moods, from light, aromatic, bubbly Moscato, Lambrusco and Prosecco, to strong, earthy, yang Cannonau, Barolo, Brunello or Nero d'Avola. This includes the flavors and nuances in between that the Italian native vines are able to offer to wine lovers worldwide.

Thus, we hope to see more organization follow suit along these lines, not only in Italy, but worldwide. In a world that appears to get smaller and smaller, we appreciate the differences which reflect the whole color spectrum. As opposed to what some would like us to believe, the planet offers far more than just black and white choices.
