December 2004 – To introduce the Company of the Month for December 2004, we move all the way to the south of Italy, right down to the heel of the boot, and point our attention to the Accademia dei Racemi, or The Racemi Academy, from Manduria, the homeland of the ancient Primitivo vines that grow only in this region of Italy and has the same DNA as that of the American Zinfandel.

The Accademia dei Racemi is an organization that gathers together the most passionate winegrowers, agronomists and enologists of the region to promote the production of local quality wines.

They select the most interesting vineyards and get the owners involved in their project by assisting them with the vine management and providing them technical support to produce better grapes. The winery activities are coordinated by internationally trained expert enologists, to produce the best Apulia wines and deliver them to wine lovers worldwide.

The group works mostly with native grapes, mostly Primitivo, Negramaro and Malvasia Nera di Lecce, but give modern interpretation to the lesser known varieties as well, as they are nonetheless part of the regional vine heritage.

In addition, they also experiment cautiously with international grapes, as those varieties find their way into the local vineyards, among the appreciated local ancient vines.

Inspired by the model of ancient Greece, the Accademia is a place where members compare ideas and apply the fruits of their different experiences to build a community of wine producers that can best express the excellence of Apulia wines.

Why Racemi?
The racemi is the name of the second round of fruits that are abundantly produced by some local grape varieties, such as Primitivo and Catarratto, after the first bloom. These second generation fruits ripen about 20 days after the harvesting of the primary grapes, therefore they are harvested and crushed at a later time, providing the opportunity to improve, and in some cases salvage, the first round of must.

The true root of the name Accademia dei Racemi is the following: an organization of people who, through confrontation, dialectic, and teamwork build a common project rooted in the regional landscape, to jumpstart the area's prestigious re-birth.

At the beginning of this new millennium, the goal of these pioneers is to bring Apulia with proud dignity into its righteous place as a member of the club of great wine producing regions.
