Here we complete our exploration of the Bresciani del Garda, or "Brescia Shores of the Garda Lake" wine road, visiting the San Martino della Battaglia (St. Martin of the Battle) wine zone.
San Martino della Battaglia is an area of major historical interest, as well as a small climatic and geopedologic niche. This zone marks the boundary between the morainal hillsides and the inland regions south of Garda Lake, between the Lugana DOC and southern tip of the Garda Classico DOC zone.

In this area, the Tocai Friulano vine has found its ideal home, and have survived the external influences and the various hypes that caused the spread of other white and red grape varieties over time. The reason why local wine growers have stuck with the Tocai grape is the clearly unquestionable high quality of the product, certainly not the amount of grape produced, which is quite limited. The old vines often give their best on the rocky hillsides, where the low production yields matched with sophisticated wine making techniques result in a truly satisfying, aromatic wine.
The San Martino della Battaglia DOC is a dry white wine with pleasant floral undertones, which are typical of the variety and achieve perfection in the mature grape. The wine is characterized by moderate acidity that makes it ideal served either as an aperitif, or with hors d'oeuvres and light, delicate fish dishes that enhance the refined, harmonious and aromatic qualities of the Tocai Friulano grape.
The grape is used to produce the San Martino della Battaglia Liquoroso as well. This is a fortified wine of exceptional quality, with an evocative bouquet reminiscent of honey, dried fruit and citrus skin. Its surprisingly balanced contrast of flavors brings out the best of each nuance in a perfect taste. The San Martino della Battaglia Liquoroso is perfect when served at the end of the meal with non-creamy desserts, sharp cheeses or on its own, as a digestivo, or "aid to digestion", as the Italian would say.
