Road of the Wines Bresciani del Garda – Production Zone of Garda Classico D.O.C. Wines - June 1, 2004
June 2004
Here we will continue to explore the e road of the wines Bresciani del Garda, or "Wines from the Brescia Shores of the Garda Lake". This month we visit the Garda Classico wine zone.
The Area
The zone is located on the western shores of the largest Italian lake, in the heart of the spectacular Valtenesi hills. Since 1967, the quality of the DOC wines produced here has improved consistently and, in 1996, it was awarded the "Classico" suffix to be added to the Garda zone denomination.
The addition of "Classico" as part of the official denomination, is very important to wine professionals and enthusiasts alike, as it stands for tradition, and since only areas that have a long wine production history may be allowed to use the term. In addition, it guarantees quality, since "Classico" is awarded exclusively to wines produced according to the highest quality standards. Finally, the word communicates a passion and love for Mother Earth, the environment and agricultural life, as only the best and most well-cared for grapes are suitable to produce such admirable wines.

Throughout the Lake Garda area, which is one of the most important tourist regions of Italy, vineyards are an integral and essential part of the landscape and environment. The cultivated fields are set in a delicate, respectful and special balance with the landscape, becoming in themselves a tourist environment, ready to welcome those who seek a peaceful refuge off the beaten track in the countryside or the hills surrounding the lake.
The strict production rules for these wines, as for all Italian D.O.C. wines, must be followed to the letter. The rules are based on, and take full advantage of, the local wine making traditions. The result is a range of different wines reflecting the enological richness of the area. At the same time this guarantees consistent high quality production standards.
The Wines
- Garda Classico White.
Made with70% minimum Rhine and Italian Riesling grapes, this is a truly pleasant wine that presents a range of aromatic intensity, depending on the percentage mix of the two main grapes. Harmonious, balanced and fresh, with hints of almond, it is perfect to pair with light fish or vegetable dishes and mild cheeses.
- Garda Classico Chiaretto.
Without any doubt, this is the most unusual and characteristic among the "Garda Classico Denomination" wines. Unique in its delightful properties, it is made with the Garda Classico Red grapes (Groppello, minimum 30%; Marzemino, minimum 5%; Barbera, minimum 5%; and Sangiovese, minimum 5%), vinified to give a "rose petal" blush to it. It stands apart from other rosés worldwide for its surprisingly floral and wild berry bouquet, supported by the proper level of acidity that lend a fresh, savory taste to it. To fully appreciate its unique qualities, this wine must be drunk young. It is perfect paired to a wide range of light, summer dishes, savory fish and white meat recipes, hors d'oeuvres and vegetable dishes.
- Garda Classico Groppello and Groppello Reserve.
This wine is made with the local grape of the same name and is considered an enological rarity, since this vine is cultivated exclusively on the slopes of the magnificent Valtenesi hillside that surrounds Lake Garda. The wine comes in three quality biotypes, which are Gentile, Mocasina and Santo Stefano. It is the most typical wine produced in the area. It's a light, easy-drinking red, laced with fruity and velvety undertones that makes it a wonderful pairing with savory pasta dishes, all types of meat recipes and medium-sharp cheeses.
After especially careful picking and sorting of the grapes, part of the wine is occasionally aged for at least a two years, thus earning the "Reserve" sub-denomination that indicates a richer wine suitable for medium aging, filled with sweet and spicy overtones, full-body, excellent depth and very satisfying, yet mild, tannins. It is best paired with more intense red meat platters, spit-roasted meats Brescia style, and many other dishes from the typical Lombardy cuisine.
- Garda Classico Red and Red Superiore.
This wine is made with Groppello (30% min.), Marzemino (5% min.), Barbera (5% min.) and Sangiovese (5% min.) grapes. This brings together local grapes (Groppello and Marzemino) and internationally-known grapes (Barbera and Sangiovese) in a distinctive synthesis that spotlights the best of the area’s wine making tradition. It is a well-structured wine that pairs well with light meals when young, while the "Superiore" ("Superior") red, which must age at least a year before release, may be served with red meat or game, spit-roasted meat Brescia style and even the most elaborate Italian and international recipes.
- Garda Bresciano Novello.
The production rules specify that a special, elaborate technique must be applied to local red grapes to produce this delightful wine. Such a fresh and delicate flavor make this red wine a wonderful pairing with pasta seasoned with tomato-based sauces, medium-spiced meats, cheeses such as Provolone and even roasted chestnuts, an all-Italian fall specialty.
