View of the Azienda Agrituristica "Le Casette" from the valley's fields |
The Azienda Agrituristica "Le Cassette" or "Little Houses" is a 15 hectares family farm that includes wide hillside vineyards, orchard, vegetables and arable land.
The view alone is worth the trip to this quiet spot on the Appenine foothills overlooking Castelvetro, just few kilometers outside of Modena, in the Emilia-Romagna region. Depending on the season, one is greeted by gentle hillsides of green grass waving in the light breeze that cools and perfumes the air on hot summer days. In wintertime, the scenery changes to long lines of tall vines grown on poles that frame the churc'sh bell tower and the medieval towers of the castle that overlooks Castelvetro. Whenever you go, a sense of calm and peace awaits you along with the feeling of stepping into a gentler past, a time when life was maybe harder, but where man and the land here in tune.
While in the area, try visiting some of the medieval buildings some of which are still used by local residents today you'll find it well worth the effort.
- Palazzo Rangoni, the one time residence of the lords of Castelvetro, still has some rooms with rare examples of Renaissance ceilings.
- Piazza Roma, with the neighboring Municipal palace and the two towers of the Orologio (Clock Tower) and delle Prigionio (Prison Tower). The square itself is paved in cotto (bricks) and extends over the valley below as a terrace looking out on a breathtaking view. To this day the Piazza (square) is still the real heart of the town. In its center there is a large black and white marble and stone chess board where, every other year a famous living chess game is played to celebrate the poet Torquato Tasso's stay in Castelvetro.
-
L'Oracolo di San Michele, (St. Michael Oratory) is just two kilometers (just over a mile) along the Roman built road, via Tiberia. It is a Romanesque jewel dating from the 12th century that was recently restored.
Panorama of Castelvetro
- A little further down one finds the Castle of Levizzano, dating back to the 1st century. It was expanded under the rule of the Canossa family and provided with a watchtower named after the historic figure of Matilde di Canossa. It assumed its present form in the 14th century when it became property of the Rangone family who held it until the 18th century.
- Finally, one may complete this plunge into the past with a visit to the Santuary of Puianello, built in the 18th century.
