Introduction
Here we continue our introduction of Italy's 155 Protected Designations of Origin (PDO, or, in Italian, DOP, Denominazione di Origine Protetta) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGI, or IGP in Italian, Indicazione Geografica Protetta) products.
This month we are presenting the Bergamotto di Reggio Calabria DOP (Bergamotto is a type of citrus with a typically strong aroma) from Calabria, and the Arancia Rossa di Sicilia IGP (Red Orange, sometimes called "Blood Orange") from Sicily.

Characteristics of the Product
The bergamotto is a yellow-colored, round-shaped citrus with average weight of 100 grams (a little over 3.5 ounces).
The plants bloom in April and the fruits are harvested from November to March.
The main characteristic of the bergamotto is its typical aroma. It is used in cosmetics, as well as in the preparation of liqueurs, aromatic teas, candies, candied fruits, gelato and soft drinks.
The product is marketed either in kegs or glass containers, which must be identified with the wording "Bergamotto di Reggio Calabria - Olio Essenziale" (Bergamotto from Reggio Calabria – Essential Oil).

Arancia Rossa di Sicilia IGP (Sicily)

Characteristics of the Product
The pigments present in the skin give the Arancia Rossa di Sicilia IGP a very saturated color. The fruit has a characteristic sweet flavor.
There are three different varieties of Red Orange from Sicily IGP: Tarocco, Moro and Sanguinello.
- The Tarocco variety has orange colored skin with parts of it colored in red. The inside pulp is orange color with red marbling which is more or less pronounced depending on the harvesting period.
- The Moro variety has orange colored skin with wine-red nuances which appear more evident on one side of the fruit. The inside pulp color is wine-red when completely ripe.
- The Sanguinello variety has orange colored skin with red nuances. The inside pulp is orange color with red marbling.
The Arancia Rossa di Sicilia IGP is marketed with the Indicazione Geografica Protetta logo applied to any single fruit.

- Province of Siracusa, in the municipalities of Lentini, Francofonte, Carlentini, Buccheri, Melilli, Augusta, Priolo, Siracusa, Floridia, Solarino, Sortino.
- Province of Enna, in the municipalities of Centuripe, Regalbuto, Catenanuovo.
