Bookmark and ShareThe history of the Tuscan town of Montepulciano has always been tightly linked to that of its famed vineyards and wines.

An ancient legend claims that Montepulciano was founded by Etruscan king, Porsenna, who moved from Chiusi to the ancient hill of Mons Mercurius, and later changed the name of the hill to Mont Politicus. The fact that wine has long been part of Montepulciano's history, is also proved by a kylix (wine drinking cup) decorated with red figures and the image of Flufluns, the Etruscan version of Bacchus, the wine god, which was discovered in an Etruscan tomb near the town.

The DOCG appellation for the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (Noble Wine from Montepulciano) wine was awarded in 1980. The DOC appellation for the Rosso di Montepulciano (Red [Wine] from Montepulciano), was created to define the legally allowed yield per hectare, alcohol content, and minimum ageing. The production zone is the same for both wines.

The Azienda Agricola Buracchi is a family run farm located in the village of Cervognano, in the southwest part of the Montepulciano area. The commercial farm includes 13 hectares (around 32 acres) of vineyards, cultivated at an elevation of 350 meters above sea level, and produces mainly Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, Rosso di Montepulciano DOC, and Sangiovese IGT Toscana. Cervognano is believed to be among the best places for production of these types of wine.

Well aware of the saying that good wine is produced mainly in the vineyard, the Buracchi family has always avoided the use of herbicides and other chemicals which could be harmful to the wonderful, natural process of maturation of the grapes. The sole treatments given to the plants are copper- and sulfur-based, in addition to loving manual labor supervised by experienced, trustworthy experts.

By law, pressing, vinification and ageing of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG and Rosso di Montepulciano DOC must take place in the municipal area of Montepulciano, thus Azienda -Agricola Buracchi ages their wines in 40-hectoliter (1.056 gallons), or smaller, Slavonia oak vats. On the other hand, bottling and refinement in the bottles takes places at the family Chianciano Terme estate, just a few miles away from the vineyards.

In addition to vines, the commercial farm grows 2.5 hectares (slightly over 6 acres) of olive trees. The 700-plant olive grove, provide the fruits for the production of extra virgin olive oil in addition to wine, lays on the slopes of a beautiful Tuscan hill overlooking the old manor-house, which the family has recently begun to restructure.

"The identity of Montepulciano is inside our bottles of Vino Nobile," says Marco Buracchi, "the wine that is 'noble within'."
